III. Cradock Taylor, prisionero, de su puño y letra

La primera carta que Cradock Taylor le escribe a Franklin está fechada sólo tres días después de la de Frazer, su valedor; es del 29 de junio de 1779.

I make no doubt but by this time Mr. Frazer has acquainted Your Excerlency in what Manner I came into the British Navy but for fear he Shod. not I take the liberty to Acquaint you that I was against my Inclination taken out of a Nuteral Vessel & Compeld. to serve his Britanick Majesty. I Now embrace this oppertunity of Returning to my Native Cuntry America an oppertunity I long have wished for I hope your Exerlency will take my case into Consideration as I have no Friends in this place (& what is still worse no Money) but have been Oblig’d to live upon my 12 Sols per. day tho not without Contracting some Small Depts now Sir if your Excerlency will be so kind as to obtain me my liberty to Return to my Native Cuntry (which I make no doubt but you can from the Aliance betweeen France & America) it will ever be esteemed as the greatest favour that could be conferd on your most obedient & greatly Obligd. Humbl. Servt.

Señor,
no me cabe la menor duda de que para estas horas, el señor Frazer le ha hecho saber a su Excelencia de qué manera acabé en la Marina británica, pero por temor a que no lo haya hecho, me tomo yo mismo la libertad de explicaros que contra mi voluntad fui sacado de un barco neutral y obligado a servir a su británica Majestad. ahora me aferro a esta oportunidad de regresar a mi país de origen, America, una oportunidad que largamente he deseado. espero que su excelencia considere mi caso, ya que no tengo amigos en este lugar (y lo que es peor, no tengo dinero) y he sido obligado a vivir con mis doce sueldos al día aunque no sin contraer algunas pequeñas deudas, ahora, señor, si su excelencia fuera tan generoso como para obtener mi libertad de regresar a mi país nativo (de lo que no dudo pueda a partir de la alianza entre Francia y America) sería estimado como el mayor favor que se le pudiera otorgar a su más obediente y grandemente obligado humilde siervo.
